Available Light

a foundational collaboration between Lucinda Childs, Frank Gehry, and John Adams

This seminal collaborative work by composer John Adams, choreographer Lucinda Childs and architect Frank O. Gehry was originally created as a site-specific work for LA MOCA’s Temporary Contemporary exhibition space in 1983. The piece is an hour-long multi-layered work comprised of eleven dancers, original music for synthesizers, a set made of industrial platforms and chain link fencing material and light. Now, reinvented for the current Lucinda Childs Dance Company with a set re-conceived for touring by Frank Gehry, the 2015 production of Available Light “is a revelation…gorgeous to behold and thrilling to hear — the work now brilliantly illuminates how three American artists on the cusp of greatness made the momentous leap.” (The Los Angeles Times).

Pomegranate produced the 2015 revival of Available Light, which featured new costumes by Kasia Walicka-Maimone. Pomegranate worked with designer Frank Gehry and his team to reimagine the set to make it tourable, raised commissioning money (including through a partnership with the Pew Charitable Trust; and supported the Lucinda Childs Dance Company under our artist support infrastructure.

“Available Light is a work of blazing formal beauty…a dance whose structural underpinnings are responsible for its ultimate beauties. The ideas behind it tell us something about the artists and our lives.”
